"Surprises happen all the time" Arrington's November Letter

Dear Beloved Community,

Some people in order to discover God, read books. But there is a great book: the very appearance of created things. Look above you! Look below you! Note it. Read it. God, whom you want to discover, never wrote that book with ink. Instead He set before your eyes the things that He had made. Can you ask for a louder voice than that? What, heaven and earth shout to you, “God made me!”
— attributed to St. Augustine, loosely translated. ref. Mann, T. God of Dirt: Mary Oliver and the Other book of God

God spoke loudly to me this past Saturday afternoon. I sat, with my five-year old daughter, on the edge of our 8 x 8 raised garden putting it to bed for the winter.  The clearing of yellow and brown leaves revealed six, hidden plants with long green shoots lying flat against the dirt.  Surprised and delighted to find a mini harvest just when we thought there was no more, we gathered the bunches of long leaves like ponytails and Vaeh proudly cut the last of the arugula.

These kinds of surprises happen all the time in daily life if we look and listen.  In this newsletter, Madison Clark, LT Fellow at Esperanza Academy, stumbles into her discovery of the soul of Intentional Community, and Lacresha Johnson, LT Alumna 2013, has her true vocation revealed at Boston Healthcare for the Homeless.

We would love to hear how God is capturing your attention during this upcoming season of Advent.  Please join us on Friday, December 11th at 6:30pm for a Christmas Party and Open House at 40 Prescott Street in Brookline, MA, to meet our amazing class of fellows, alumni and staff... and to share food, stories and caroling.

Blessings and thank you,

The Reverend Arrington Chambliss
